Bernard John Melewski, a World War II veteran, was born in Watervliet to John  Chmielewski and Catherine Gush.  He died October 10, 2016.

Bernard, known as Bernie to his friends, served in the Army from 1946 to 1948.  He was stationed in Tokyo, Japan as part off the occupation force.  He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after many years carrying the mail by foot in Waterford and later by car making rural deliveries in Halfmoon.

Bernie loved to bowl and to go fishing, especially with his brother Billy.  He was a dedicated volunteer in the community, serving with the Halfmoon Fire Department as a member, President and Fire Chief for more than 20 years.  He also served as a Saratoga County Deputy Fire Coordinator and for some time as a Fire Inspector for the Town of Halfmoon.  He was also a life member of the American Legion.

Bernie was married for more than forty years to Rosalind Waldron Melkewski.  He had two sons by a previous marriage, Bernard Carl and Peter.,
