What was the Homeowner Tax Rebate Credit Check (HRTC)?
The homeowner tax rebate credit (HTRC) was a one-year program providing direct property tax relief to eligible homeowners in 2022. If you qualify, the state automatically sent you a check for the amount of your credit. To be eligible you must have:
- qualified for a 2022 STAR credit or exemption,
- had income that was less than or equal to $250,000 for the 2020 income tax year and
- a school tax liability for the 2022-2023 school year that is more than your STAR benefit.

Please note that if you receive exemptions that wipe out your school tax bill, you will not receive a HTRC. The NYS Department of Taxation and Finance send out the checks. If you qualify, you should expect a check sometime between June and when the school tax bills are due on September 30th. If you do not receive a check by September 30th, you may call the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance at (518)-453-8146 for information.
